Broken Symmetry

Duo CobogóTarang Poddar & Juliano Abramovay

Tabla, oud and guitar in front of a carved stone screen

Broken Symmetry, the debut album of Jazz – World Music Duo Cobogó, captures the musical dialogue between tabla player Tarang Poddar and guitarist/oud player Juliano Abramovay.

Rooted in North Indian classical music, Eastern Mediterranean modality and Brazilian rhythm, the album reflects years of shared exploration and the gradual emergence of a common musical language within the jazz idiom.

Rather than simply blending traditions, the duo allows their influences to settle deeply into their creative process, where they can reappear naturally within new compositions and improvisations.

Some pieces pay tribute to guiding figures such as Ralph Towner, Hermeto Pascoal, and Zakir Hussain, while others arise directly from the intuitive exchange between the two musicians.

Tarang Poddar with his tabla in front of a carved stone screen

Tarang Poddar, born in India and based in the Netherlands, is a tabla player, composer, and bandleader working between Indian classical music, jazz, and contemporary world traditions.

Trained rigorously in India in the guru-led tradition, he performed early on as a soloist and accompanist to leading Indian classical artists.

Moving fluidly between jazz, flamenco, and Brazilian influences adapted to the tabla, his work spans concerts, theatre, and original compositions.

Grounded yet exploratory, his music reflects rhythm as a refined and expressive language.

Juliano Abramovay is a versatile Brazilian musician, composer, and oud and fretless guitar player whose work bridges Eastern Mediterranean musical traditions with Brazilian influences.

After studying classical guitar at São Paulo’s Municipal School of Music, he expanded his artistic practice through the exploration of fretless instruments and modal music traditions.

His recent projects include the music direction of LESTE at Casa do Povo, collaborations and touring with the Netherlands Blazers Ensemble, and the soundtrack for the circus theatre production Sawdust Symphony at Korzo Theatre.

Juliano’s work is marked by collaborations across contemporary music, improvisation, theatre, and intercultural performance contexts.

Much like the architectural element cobogó – which filters light and air through patterned openings – the music on Broken Symmetry balances structure and openness, grounding itself in tradition while creating space for new stories to emerge.
